This robust, well built animal is found in small herds which are headed by a dominant bull. Bachelor herds are sometimes seen. It is preyed upon by lion and takes to water readily when pursued. It is found in stony or rocky areas, quite often some distance from water. Calves are commonly taken by leopard, cheetah and wild dogs. Waterbuck exude a heavy turpentine scent. The cow lacks horns.
Diet – Predominantly a grazer. They will however occasionally browse.
