ECKS recently returned from from Botwana after a memorable elephant safari. The camp out of which the safari was based comprised 4 on-suite luxury tented units each conected by a wooden walkway. The camp is located on a 200 000 hactare concession. A water hole at the camp provides for constant viewing of large herds of buffalo and elephant, with occasional visits by lion, hyena and wild dogs. The buffalo herds ranged from a few to 600 at time. The elephant safari is conducted by tracking these large animals on foot. The tracks are located on roads or from water holes. The tracks are sized, and if large enough, the elephants are then tracked by foot. The distance to track these animals could vary from 1 mile to 10 miles or more. The use of GPS is vital in the quest for tracking these animals.
