Eastcape & Karoo Safaris Hunt Crocodile in Malawi

October 16, 2012

Eastcape & Karoo Safaris recently embarked on a crocodile safari in Malawi. Malawi is well known for hunting good size crocodiles. The concession was in the Elephant marsh on the Cherie River. The accommodation was in fly tents which were based on wooden planks due to the marshy conditions. Dining and bar area was a comfortable reed boma also fitted onto wooden planks.

The conditions are extreme as the only way for hunting these cocs was too either set up a blind, or to stalk them through the reeds and along the banks. After scouting the area for sittings or signs of big crocs, we then set baits for these cunning animals.

After four days of baiting and stalking we were fortunate to lure this 12 foot croc onto a mud bank. The shot placement is vital; as these animals would slip back into the water should the shot placement be slightly off target. The perfect shot would be at the base of the smile of the croc where the head meets the body. The idea is the severe the spinal column where it links onto the brain.
